Some sites can't be improved section by section — the underlying structure is the problem. An overhaul rebuilds the page from scratch while keeping the content that earned its place.

There's a point at which incremental fixes cost more than a rebuild and deliver less. Recognising it early saves a lot of wasted effort, because the symptoms are fairly distinctive.
The signs you're past patching
Every change breaks something else. Nobody is willing to touch the stylesheet. The mobile layout is maintained separately from the desktop one. There are override rules stacked three deep, and a `!important` count nobody wants to quote.
When the cost of a small change has become unpredictable, the site is no longer a system you're maintaining — it's a set of exceptions you're negotiating with.
What an overhaul keeps
Not the markup, not the stylesheet. But the content — your copy, your images, your headings, your link structure — is the part with accumulated value, and it survives.
That is the crucial distinction between an overhaul and starting a new site. You're replacing the implementation, not the asset.
Rebuilding is now the cheaper option
The reason overhauls were avoided is that rebuilding used to be the most expensive thing you could do. When a page can be regenerated from its own URL in under a minute, the arithmetic changes — a rebuild becomes competitive with a week of careful patching.
That makes the overhaul available to sites that would previously have limped along for another three years.
Common questions
Is an overhaul the same as a redesign?
An overhaul is a redesign that also replaces the underlying implementation. If your markup and CSS are the problem, patching the design on top of them won't hold.
How much of my site should be overhauled at once?
Template by template. Rebuilding everything simultaneously maximises the chance of something being missed; rebuilding one template, deploying and watching is safer and stoppable.
Will I lose search rankings?
Not if your URLs and content stay put. Rankings are at risk when paths change without redirects, which is a deployment decision rather than a consequence of rebuilding.
What do I get to hand a developer?
Semantic HTML and CSS, or React components — working code rather than a design file requiring another implementation pass.
Rebuild your most important template first and let the result decide the scope.
